Packing for the trip
9 tips to have an amazing trip.
The chances that people have to experience psychedelic medicine are few. The people who have access to the likes of hallucinogens like LSD and Magic mushrooms form part of a narrow minority of the world, whose fate has led them to the exquisite dimension of the different doors of perception.
However, a novice psychonaut who is “tripping” for the first time may have the unfortunate fate of opening these doors at the wrong moment at the wrong time. I have observed this sad story happen numerous times with individuals who ingested psychedelics in not-so-ideal scenarios, leading them to have “bad trips” which can be extremely challenging for newcomers and therefore dissuade them from ever using the medicine again.
That being said, it’s quite easy to avoid this situation, and if you are thinking about doing any psychedelic for the first time, here are some recommendations for your first trip.
Pre-trip exercise: I love to do some aerobic workout before dropping acid or eating mushrooms. Jogging a couple of miles is an absolute anxiety kicker that will purify your mind from any toxic mindsets.
Avoid tripping during a stressful time: If you are thinking about tripping to “escape” from a tough social/economical situation, I have bad news: psychedelics tend to show you what you are actively avoiding in your mind. This can be positive as it will allow you to approach your issues from a new perspective; however, it can be challenging for someone who is not experienced. So avoid tripping if you are having problems in your familiar, romantic, or business relationships.
Watch what you eat: I believe that fasting is the best way to go on a trip; however if you feel like you need to eat, make sure to eat clean both before and during the trip. Avoid saturated fats and refined sugars. A psychedelic trip will intensify the sensation surrounding the effects and taste of food and it can be a perfect opportunity to appreciate something simple like grapes or an orange. I remember I made the mistake of eating a microwaved Walmart brownie and could immediately feel one of the deepest feelings of depression of my life.
Meditation: You are not your mind, and the thoughts that you see appear in front of you are not yours and do not represent who you are. Actively adopting a meditation regime will help you understand this truth; however, you can also simply have a pre-trip meditation session (I recommend 20-30 minutes).
Prayer: If meditation is not your cup of tea, prayer might be. It can be of any religious affiliation or even something personal that you created.
Avoid crowds: If you are the socially-anxious type, then perhaps you should wait a while before you decide to drop acid at a rave. It can also be stressful to trip in an urban area where situations are changing and unpredictable. Stick to natural areas as cities have too many distractions and you will quickly realize how poisonous advertisements are.
Have a place to retreat: If you decide to go outside on your trip, make sure to have a cozy place to retreat to, especially since it’s normal to feel lethargic after an experience.
A trip on a sunny day: Tripping on a cloudy day may damper your mood, as your body receives less serotonin (the happiness chemical). It feels amazing to feel the sun hit your skin when you are tripping; however, make sure not to get sunburned. Tripping on a snowy day is not bad, albeit keeping in mind that the psychedelic will enhance your corporal feelings and could make the cold unbearable.
Have music ready: The use of music during psychedelic rituals is as ancient as Native cultures in the Americas, and it can help you through your journey. If a trip becomes too challenging, it always helps to have a set of speakers with your favorite album ready in case of an emergency ( I love ‘Division Bell’).
There is no such thing as a bad trip, but instead challenging ones that put the traveler in a tough position, often because the psychonaut may have felt overconfident and decided to break the principles of set and setting. We all go through this at one point in our lives and have no other option but to learn from our mistakes. Remember, no trip last forever
That being said, it is better to make sure that the first trip is one full of wonder and ecstasy, as it gives the initiate a taste of how amazing life is.
